Biography:
Christopher Lance Coleman, PhD, MS, MPH, FAAN, FADLN, PMHCNS began his tenure as Dean & Professor, May 2023.
Recently, Dr. Coleman received the NBNA 2024 "Trailblazer Award" and was inducted as a Luminary Fellow to the inaugural class for the newly established Academy of Diversity Leaders in Nursing (ADLN). The inaugural ADLN Fellows have demonstrated expertise in one or more areas of nursing education, research, practice, policy, or administration as it relates to issues of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI). Additionally, he was appointed to the American Academy of Nursing's AI Taskforce, July 4, 2024.
Prior to his role at Oakland, he was the Mark & Maureen Miller Head & Professor at Purdue University School of Nursing, West Lafayette, and served as Associate Dean & Professor at the Indiana University School of Nursing, Fort Wayne Campus (IUFW) and as Department Chair and Professor at the University of Tennesee Health Science Center, College of Nursing Prior. During his tenure at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Nursing, Dr. Coleman was Director of the Health Equity Collaborative, and the Fagin Term Associate Professor, served as Chair of the Faculty Senate, and Chair of the Biomedical IRB Panel, and the MPH Admissions Committee in the Penn School of Medicine. Additionally, he served as the Co-Director of the former Center of Health Equity Research Center School of Nursing or 13 years. Dr. Coleman brings extensive experience serving in key leadership roles in healthcare settings.
Dr. Coleman’s clinical work has included mental health, HIV/AIDS and hospital administration in addition to working in private practice as a mental health clinician. Additionally, Dr. Coleman has extensive experience in the non-profit arena establishing services for persons living with HIV/AIDS and serving on both nonprofit and for profit Boards in the role of Chairman, President, Treasure, and hospital Board of Trustees. While in Indiana, he served as Co-Chair of the Development Committee and served on the Executive Committee at the Indiana Center for Nursing. He was recently appointed to the Board of Springer Publishing Company a nationwide publisher of health science and nursing products.
Dr. Coleman’s research focuses on understanding factors that influence health-promoting behaviors of HIV infected middle-aged and older African American men and HIV risk factors among vulnerable populations. Additionally, he has also investigated symptom management strategies used by HIV infected populations. He has served as PI and Co-I on NIH grants, foundations, and intramural funding. Dr. Coleman’s program of research, which has focused on behavioral clinical trials and studies in international settings has collectively made a substantial and significant contribution towards reducing the transmission of HIV/AIDS to the general public in particular African American MSM and women. His work has been published in leading peer review journals to multidisciplinary audiences and presented regionally and nationally.
His work has been cited in interdisciplinary journals such as AIDS Patient Care and STDS, Clinical Psychology-Science and Practice, Journal of General Internal Medicine, Vaccine, AIDS Education and Prevention, and Ethnicity & Disease, as well as top tier nursing journals, including Nursing Research, Journal of Advanced Nursing, Journal of Nursing Scholarship, and Advances in Nursing Science. Dr. Coleman has served on NIH & HRSA Study Sections, serves as peer reviewer for leading peer review journals, and on several editorial boards. Out of his body of scholarship emerged a book entitled “Dangerous Intimacy, which focused on 10 African American men with HIV, and he also authored the book “MANUP” A practical Guide for Men in Nursing published by Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society.
Dr. Coleman, has mentored faculty, undergraduate, masters and doctoral students, and is the recipient of mentorship and teaching awards. He completed a year long leadership fellowship with the Society of Behavioral Medicine and year long leadership fellowship with the American Association of Colleges in Nursing association. He received his BS from Walla Walla University and a MS from Oregon Health Sciences University in Family and Child Psychiatry. Dr. Coleman received his PhD with a minor in education from the University of California, San Francisco in, and completed a Post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles where his area of concentration focused on the quantitative measurement of health-related quality of life in persons living with AIDS. Additionally, he earned an MPH from the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health where he focused on the epidemiology of infectious diseases.
Dr. Coleman is an elected Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, for his outstanding scientific contributions. In the Academy, he served on the Fellowship Selection Committee, Co-Chaired the Expert Panel on Health Equity, served on the Development Committee and currently serves on the Health Equity Expert Panel. Dr. Coleman is also a Luther Christman Fellow and serves on the Advisory Panel for Nurse Tim Inc.
